BOWLING on Break

Ken Clark

Students are on break. But this is still a great time to assign a little thought provoking work to keep the Sports Business brain ticking over.

The sports-rich window of the holidays, the time from late December through early January, are an interesting case study in aligning your brand with a sporting event. The Dukes Mayo Bowl and the Pop-Tarts Bowl have created quite the buzz and viral moments. One featured a bath in the title sponsor's product for the winning coach and the other created an amazing moment with a mascot portraying the fun, breakfast treat. These Bowl Games bring top college football programs together for a tasty match up during this festive time. These Bowl Games are not crowning National Champions. These match-ups are not deciding the best team in the land. So, why do these games exist? What brings sponsors on board? Even deeper than simply sponsoring, what drives a sponsoring brand to work to create a viral moment?

What can be gained from this as a sponsor? Are there long term benefits? What do the schools gain from participation?

Having students do some research into a bowl game or two will help uncover more and more of the opportunities in Sports Business. It will help them continue to look past the shiny wrapping paper and dig into what is inside and how it works.

Pick a bowl or two - - dig in and share what you find out!!!
