The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium in the NFL's first playoff game streamed exclusively on Peacock. The initial ratings have declared it to be the most streamed NFL game ever with 23M viewers. The prior record was 15M+ viewers for a Thursday Night Football game on Prime Video & Amazon Studios. Peacock's previous exclusive game attracted around 7M viewers. This is the playoffs and this is the NFL. 93 of the top 100 viewed Telecasts of 2023 were Football games. This number seems feasible, but when it comes to streaming it is not always easy to determine the validity and the "success" in the numbers.
Reports are that the 23M viewers include the local markets of KC and Miami where the game aired for free. Ultimately, the success could be judged by that big 23M number. Success could be judged by new Peacock subscribers. Success could be judged by the number of those new subscribers who tune back in to Peacock this month or better yet keep their subscription for the year.
Success also might just be the fact that it happened. The National Football League (NFL) pushed the edges of broadcast potential for a mainstream sport. It made people uncomfortable. It divided opinions. I am really curious and excited to see where this takes us. I am here for all of it.
