Josh Harris and David Blitzer are household names of Professional Sports ownership. They own a stake in the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils and the Washington Commanders. This week they made a $10M investment to acquire the majority stake of the ForeverLawn sports complex in Canton, OH at the Football Hall of Fame. This acquisition will supercharge the amount of Youth Sports Activity that will occur on the complex.
This is not the first investment in youth sports linked a sports Hall of Fame. Cooperstown All Star Village is a massive youth sports property that brings thousands of youth baseball players to Cooperstown, NY and the Baseball Hall of Fame every year. These large complexes that are anchored by the Hall of Fame have created a tractor beam for many aspiring young athletes. Close to home, my nephew has three fund raisers going to help his team go to Cooperstown this Summer.
While the rising costs of youth sport participation is not "new" news, this investment highlights that this trend is not slowing, and in fact becoming more an area of investment. From traditional sports like Baseball, Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Lacrosse, or Soccer to more niche sports like Snowboarding, Surfing, or Climbing to the much, unchartered territory of eSports YOUTH SPORTS IS A BUSINESS.
What are some things that "must be true" for this investment to be successful? What are some examples of other big investments in youth sports? What are some examples in your local area of Youth Sports flexing some "big business" muscles? What are some potential business opportunities that are under-utilized or untapped in your Local Youth Sports market?
